You may have read the reports swirling around from Deadline that we’re going to be seeing a male-centric Ghostbusters film, and you were probably scratching your head like I was. Aren’t we seeing a female-driven film directed by Paul Feig? Is this a way to say “screw you ladies, here come THE REAL Ghostbusters?” Those are the kind of thoughts I was having, and many of you out there; but then Devin over at Badass Digest did some digging.

He reached out to people over at Sony, who found it just as baffling that Deadline was reporting a new Ghostbusters film, but then found some more interesting news. I remember when all of the Sony emails were hacked, and I remember reading one from Channing Tatum. He pitched the idea of a Ghostbusters film that starred him and Chris Pratt. In August of last year he wrote this:

Let us show the world The DarkSide and let us fight it with all the glory and epicness of a HUGE BATMAN BEGINS MOVIE. I know we can make this a huge franchise. Fun adventure craziness. COME OONNNN!!!

After remembering that he wants a shared universe and pitched this already, the following news makes a LOT more sense. The idea is that we’d be getting four Ghostbusters films. First, Feig’s Ghostbusters film that’s female-driven. Next, a film that could possibly star Chris Pratt and Tatum, and be directed by the Russo Brothers. They’re currently working on Captain America: Civil War; but with the Sony/Marvel “merger” they also signed on to do a Sony film. Looks like this is it.

Next, we’d be getting a film that combines the male and female cast. This would be the ‘Shared Universe’ film that Hollywood is so keen to plug into these days. Finally, we’d get a prequel to the franchise; but that idea really has no details on it. Let me just say that all of this is CONJECTURE. Sony had a lot of plans for Spider-Man and we know how well that turned out.

I think it would be great to see this huge Ghostbusters Universe. Especially with the idea that busting ghosts is at it’s core, but it opens up to all sorts of supernatural beings. This is the plan that Sony has, but we don’t know what will happen. We also don’t know if Tatum and Pratt will star in a film together, but they are best friends and both of them can support a movie of this scope. Also, Sony has done very well with the 21/22 Jump Street films, and I could see them wanting to keep that “buddy” film chemistry going.
